About Air Suspension and Its Uses

Air suspension systems typically consist of four pneumatic struts, an air compressor, a solenoid valve block, an accumulator tank, and air lines connecting all components. Each air suspension strut includes an air spring that functions as the coil spring, and a solenoid damper that provides resistance by magnetically controlling the piston’s linear motion.

The air spring consists of a pressurized rubber bag—commonly referred to as a U-bellow—surrounding a piston-cylinder assembly. To ensure durability and air-tight performance, the bellow is reinforced with polyamide cord inserts encased in an elastomer (rubber). For enhanced responsiveness to dynamic road conditions, such as cornering or uneven terrain, the bellows are often housed in a protective aluminum cylinder.

In some designs—particularly in rear struts of Audi vehicles—an air reservoir is added to increase air volume and maintain ride comfort without increasing the diameter of the strut, preserving cargo space.

The system operates through a network of body-level and acceleration sensors, which send continuous data to a central control module. This module manages airflow by activating the accumulator, compressor, and valve block in real time.

In Mercedes-Benz systems, each strut is equipped with its pressure sensor. In contrast, Audi systems typically use a centralized pressure sensor located in the valve block.
